Stories - The Scholar and the Boatman
Author Unknown
Once upon a time, there lived a scholar who had mastered many languages, the ancient scriptures, including the Vedas, arguably the oldest surviving texts in the world, epic literary works and so on. He was unparalleled among his peers and he was very proud of himself.

One day, he wanted to cross a river and hired a boatman. Sneering silently at the boatman’s lowly profession, the scholar asked him, “Have you ever studied the Vedas?”

The boatman said matter-of-factly, “No, I am not educated and I cannot read or write”.

Pouncing on this response, the scholar snickered, “Oh, you have wasted one-fourth of your life time by not knowing the Vedas!”

Not content to end it there, the scholar continued, “What about the great epics then? Have you ever listened to them?”

The boatman replied, “I have no time to read the epics as I leave for work very early in the morning to ferry people across the river and return home very late”.

To this the scholar said, “Oh, you have wasted half of your life time by not listening to the great epics!”

The scholar continued, “Have you at least known languages other than your mother tongue?”

To which the boatman said he never travelled outside his native land and hence, had no opportunity to learn other languages. The scholar said, “Oh, then you have wasted three-fourths of your life time”.

By this time, the boat had covered half the distance and it was in the middle of the river. The boatman noticed that water was entering through a small hole in the boat.

He asked the scholar, “Oh, respected scholar! Do you know swimming?”

The scholar replied, “I have no time to waste in learning swimming. I can just pay a small charge and cross the river at any time.”

The boatman said, “Oh respected scholar! By not knowing swimming, you have wasted your whole life time. The boat is going to sink very soon. I’m exhausted from rowing and only have the strength to swim to the bank myself…”

A nice saturday...
I was playing soccer in upper
court with friends as usual.
We met some HIHS friends..
have not seen them for a long time,
chatted with them for awhile.

I only played a few matches
because i had bad blisters on my feet.
Tsk.. Tsk.. Tsk..
I got home earlier and i forgot to
bring my T-shirt.
Thanks weifeng and Des for helping
me to take.
I rested at home for a while and met
up with my cousins.
Had a really nice, filling and healthy dinner,
consisting of a plate of steamed rice, chicken soup
3 dumplings (jiao zhi).
Meadered around J8 to wait
for my cousin's gf to fetch us.
I noticed a lot of discounted price
in J8.

My cousin's gf is very kind to
drive us to anywhere we wanted, but
we could not make a decision.
So she drove us to Suntec city for
the mid night sales.
It is really nice to have a car.
You can get anywhere at any time.
We touched up on many issues like
Relationships problems.
I could say that i really learnt a lot
from my cousin's gf,
something that i could not
have learnt from books or
in school.
I am really glad that she agrees
to my philosophies in life.

So i am having holiday now.
Spending most of my time alone.
Watching VCDs.
This shows that i am a boring
person.
Aiya.. i do go out.. for exercise with
friends and stuffs.
I am not that pathetic.
I'm not going to act cool or
fake my interest, to win
other people's heart or to gain
popularity.
Some people are naturally popular
and that's good.
I read like 9 books this holiday.
Because i am bored and i
am confident that my boredem
will force me to read books
and so.. i did.
Read about many stories and
different kind of characters in people.
Maybe one day i will find someone
who likes to do the things i do.
Maybe one day you and i will meet
a person who likes to do the
things you like whichother people
think is stupid, bo liao or childish.
LOL.. childish.. why grow up so fast?
You grow up faster, as if your life
will be happier.
I am blessed.
I have some interests common with
most of my friends.
And yeah... i am writing boring things
again.
You have finished something really boring
and yea, i must thank you.
I appreciate your time.
Not many people are as good as you,
who willing to take the time and
look at the lives of the friends
around, and show concern.
Thanks and have a good day.

I know that not many people will not
believe this.
I know that looking tan is nice for
some people.
It makes you look sporty and like
out doors.
While a slight tan is good, getting
sun burn is definitely not doing you
any good.

Sunburn accelerates the aging process,
manifested by wrinkles and a pebble
stone appearance of skin, which develops
over time. It is also a culprit in the increased
risk of cataracts and skin cancer.
The above is taken from a reliable source.

If you think that going out for volley ball, soccer
and swimming from 10am - 3pm, i seriously
advice you to apply sunscreen or play awhile
and rest for awhile.
Going out to beach under the afternoon sun
is not COOL at all.

So... health is more important than
looks.
So try to avoid hot sun.
Don't get the wrong idea that i am telling you
to be sissy or nerd who stays at home all day..
Just go out and play under the sun with ample
protection or proper clothing or try the evening
4pm+ sun.

If you think that getting sunburn
makes your skin darker and you really like tan
that much, i suggest you think again.

Life is short.
Don't be too bothered with what people
think about you.
That's what i always tell myself.
I am unique in my own ways.
I admit that i am imperfect.
If i kept thinking about why that person
is looking at me, what that guy
would think about me, wouldnt i
be living a world to suit others?
Yes i will be considerate.
Yes i will be responsible.
Yes i will obey rules.
If you keep doing things base how people
will judge you, your life wont be happy.
In the worse case scenerios,
you will be buying a shirt based on
what other people would like to see you in.
This is pretty dumb.
Or maybe you should say yes because
that guy want you to say for his request.

When you are young, you think about
having a good looking girlfriend.
You think that good looking girls would prefer
good looking guys.
When you gets older, you realised that
it is time to come to reality.
It is really not that easy to find a good looking
girl that LIKES YOU.
good looking girls and boys will also
encounter the same problems
just like any couples in this world.
Appearance is not a bond..so guys... wake up,
don't be too worried about looks anymore..
People don't like you because you have
great bodies and looks.
They like your sincerity, your guts, your
sense of justice, your love for your friends.
Unless the remarkable girl friend said:
"oh.. my BF is flirting with other girls, but
hey.. he is handsome so i shld forgive him"
As you grow old, you realised that everybody
around you are ageing.
You will realise that appearance only satisfy
your eyes.
20 years down the road.
I gaurantee that your once gorgeous boyfriend
or girlfriend is going to be....
not that good looking anymore.
What you see is no longer the appearance,
but the inner beauty of that person.
Look for good attributes like honesty, responsible, good
attitude, willing to tolerate you. etc.
that will last in the relationship for the years
to come... although some people
might change.. ( exceptional )

If money can give you happiness, then go find
a wealthy spouse. Just like parents..
they work hard to make money.
They have a lot of money.
They hire a maid, buy a lot of toys.
When you are young, you think that you are happy
to have lots of toys, piano, air con, big rooms
when you grow up, you feel that what
accompanies you throughout your childhood
are some expensive toys, maids, swimming pool..etc
Where are your parents?
Imagine this.. after school, you and your friend
is waiting to be fetched.
The mother of your friend, carried a small umbrella
to shelter your friend while she is getting drenched.
As for you, your dad's worker drove your dad's
car to fetch you.
Maybe you think you are lucky...
Your mind tells you that you are lucky..
what about your heart?

Money = power..
Gives you cars, houses, cards, priviledge, clubbing...
But then i can tell you.
The joy of having everything on earth is also
very similar to the joy of
enjoying every single day making an honest living..
the accomplishment of everyday work, everyday
success in small things.
As you grow slowly from having no money
to buying your first computer.
That is also a joy.
Joy depends on what you see in life.
If you think money makes you happy.
Then so be it.
I NEVER SAY THAT MONEY IS NOT IMPORTANT.

everything that i wrote here is my own
preference.. you can agree with me
or disagree with me.

I was really bored last friday
so i decided to go to Upper Pierce Reservoir.
I brought along the street directory, compass,
water bottle, kind of stuff that you would bring
along for hikes.
I didnt bring everything.
I made a search in online street directory
and i set off at aroud 3pm.

I like this kind of going-out-and-explore
kind of activity.
The area around there is quite nice.
I walked through the jungle trails and i was
worried about creatures like snakes because
i was alone then.
I saw the sign board that shows the different kind
snakes.. one is the tree snake, harmless to humans
because the venom is too weak.
The other one that caught my eyes is the Python.
I remembered the incident of a dog being strangled
to death by a python and i know that i may be in
danger.
I thought to myself that a python can never grow
to the size of being a threat to a teenager like me.
There is a terribly lack of food here.
They can only eat.. rats, frogs, small snakes, insects..
How to grow big? Growing big = need more food = starve.
They have no poison...
If a small python bite you and it attempt to wrap
around you, find its neck and hold it with your 2 hands.
If you can competely surround its neck, you can apply
pressure and the snake will release it's grip.
HOWEVER...
If the python is one adult size( in other countries)
... and if you don't have
enough force to strangle it before it strangle you...
I think you are dead...unless you have something sharp.
I increased my pace in case the snake that i would meet
is a King Cobra.. Yea... Singapore has King Cobra..

The place is extremely relaxing... i saw a lot of families having
picnics there.
Very queit and the breeze is great.
I saw some monkeys eating flowers and jumping around,
so close that i can touch it. So Cool...
I am going to bring some of my friends there, if
they are interested that is.
